In view of rising energy prices, homeowners in Germany invested in modern heating technology much more frequently last year than in previous years. The number of newly installed heat generators rose by 5 percent to 980,000, according to the Federal Association of the German Heating Industry (BDH). "Almost one million heat generators delivered to the market is an important step in terms of climate protection for the outdated system stock," said BDH President Jan Brockmann - especially because the share of renewable energies has increased.
The largest increase compared to the previous year was recorded by heat pumps, with a plus of 53 percent and 236,000 units sold. Heating systems based on biomass, in particular pellet heating systems, also showed disproportionately strong growth, with an increase of 17 percent and 89,000 units sold. By contrast, the number of gas heating systems sold fell by 8 percent to 598,000 units. "Uncertainty regarding the security of supply and price developments made itself felt here, especially in the first half of the year," the association said.
According to BDH estimates, the lion's share of the newly sold appliances - 870,000 units after all - replaced existing systems. The new appliances would save 1.9 to 2.3 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year.
