MILAN, Sep 19 (Class Editori) — China confirms its ranking as leading country in terms of electric vehicles in the first half-year. The country has consolidated its leadership both in manufacturing and infrastructures with the help of a domestic market in which over 51% of interviewed costumers wants to buy and electric car as their next vehicle.
This emerges from the latest study by EY’s EV (Electric Vehicle) Country Readiness Index, which ranks the main 14 car markets in the world for e-mobility.
Norway gets second place. In fact, the country has always been a pioneer in e-mobility with a mature infrastructure and market system which suffers, however, from an underdeveloped manufacturing sector, followed by Sweden, Germany and the UK.
Italy ranks twelfth, followed by Japan, Canada, and then India in last place.
Nearly half of Italians say they are willing to buy an electric car. However, in order for inflation and high energy prices not to hold back market development, “regulatory simplification and a convergence of incentives and public investment interventions with existing and future industrial initiatives on the ground will be fundamental”. This is how Giovanni Passalacqua, partner and Automotive Consulting Leader at EY in Italy, commented on the 2022 edition of EY's EV Country Readiness Index.
There remain, however, some shadows on the prospects of e-mobility in Italy, connected to citizens and the national market. First and foremost, the economic factor still weighs on the premium end of the market, which represents the largest slice of the electric supply at this time. In fact, the overall share of electric vehicles in 2021 stopped at about 9%. Moreover, the difficulty associated with recharging an electric vehicle affects the purchases of 24% of Italians, a percentage that “is lower than in other countries,” EY's Passalacqua reported.
“EY’s survey photographs a country that, despite the challenges it is facing, supports the development of e-mobility thanks to a series of initiatives recently undertaken and can count on the commitment of the entire sector in responding to consumer needs,” Giovanni Passalacqua continued.
