The French city of Strasbourg that is located on the border with Germany has officially opened its new exhibition center with a striking building designed by Japanese architect Kengo Kuma. According to the operating company, around 120 million euros were invested, of which Strasbourg, the headquarters of the European Parliament, contributed the lion's share with around 90 million euros. More than 30 municipalities in the region are administered from the city.
The first major event to be held on the newly designed site is the Strasbourg European Trade Fair. It is aimed at consumers, is being held for the 90th time, and runs until September 11.
The architectural design by Kengo Kuma & Associates had already been awarded the contract five years ago. It features a large columned hall, designed in wood.
The new site is intended to reinforce the importance of the eastern French city as a major European destination for business tourism, the operating company said. The building is located near the European Parliament.
