The German government wants to drive forward digitalization in the country with practical improvements for citizens and businesses. "We are not getting lost in visions of the future, but are now tackling digitalization in a very concrete way," said Digital Minister Volker Wissing on the sidelines of a recent cabinet meeting. One strategy envisages improving the availability of data, the creation of a digital identity, and standardizing the interaction of different systems as the central levers for this. These levers should then be "door openers for spaces of unlimited possibilities" with further applications.
Wissing said, "We want to be among the Top 10 in Europe, that's our ambition." This is already a Herculean task, he said, as there is already a need to catch up as quickly as possible. That is ambitious, he said, but also realistic. According to the strategy, each ministry should also commit to implementing 18 "flagship projects" with a timetable. The citizens could then judge the government by what had been implemented by 2025, Wissing made clear.
Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said that digitalization should also make everyday life easier for people in the public administration. In the northern state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, she said, people can already submit building applications digitally, and in the western state of Hesse they can apply for driver's licenses. "The goal, of course, is to roll this out across the board as soon as possible." At the same time, she said, it was important not to create any new dependencies and that citizens could be sure that their data was secure.
Economics Minister Robert Habeck also emphasized the goal of "digital sovereignty" in Germany and Europe with a view to applications for industrial firms and SMEs, so that they are not only dependent on developments in the American and Asian markets.
