German airline Lufthansa is strengthening its long-haul fleet with new aircraft from US manufacturer Boeing. The MDAX-listed group announced in Frankfurt that 17 aircraft are to be purchased from Boeing. These include seven Boeing 787-9 long-haul passenger aircraft, three Boeing 777F freighters, and seven 777-8F freighters (with new technology). In addition, lease agreements running through 2024 for two Boeing 777F freighter aircraft will be extended, the company statement added. No details on the purchase price were provided.
"We are consistently investing in more fuel-efficient, quieter, and more economical aircraft that emit significantly less CO2 and are thus rapidly driving forward our fleet modernization," said CEO Carsten Spohr. The aircraft now on order are among the most economical and sustainable long-haul aircraft in their class, he said. With the purchase, Lufthansa is "going on the offensive again" and expanding its leadership role, the CEO said.
Taking into account the purchases that have been decided upon, the company expects net investments of around 2.5 billion euros in 2022, the company said. Annual net investments are also expected to be around 2.5 billion euros by 2024, according to the statement. Lufthansa expects the cost benefits associated with the modernization to drive the reach its target of achieving an adjusted operating margin (adjusted earnings before interest and taxes) of at least 8 percent and a return on capital employed of at least 10 percent by 2024, the statement added.
