InfoQuest (March 21, 2022) - Mr. Chalermchai Srion, Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives (MAC) announced that the period from now to September or so is the fruit production season of the eastern region. About 744,549 tonnes of durian, 210,864 tonnes of mangosteen and 210,646 tonnes of rambutan are expected to be produced this year.
Despite the impact of COVID-19, freight increase, shortage of containers and closing of ports, Thai fruit exports still hit a record high last year due to the cooperation among fruit farmers, private enterprises and the government.
This year, the MAC has set a fruit export target for the eastern region to build up confidence for domestic and foreign consumers and enhance the potential of Thai fruit export by ensuring "zero-COVID" cases in fruit exports.
Mr. KhemKhaeng Thammadamrong, Deputy Director-General of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DOAE) said that DOAE required relevant government agencies and farmer groups to implement the policies of the MAC to strengthen quarantine management of fruits in the eastern region, especially durian and other major economic fruits.
DOAE also developed multiple measures with relevant agencies to prevent unripe durians from flowing into the market. The governments also asked major fruit farms to strictly implement relevant pandemic prevention measures to achieve "zero COVID" cases and ensure the overall stability of Thailand's exports during the fruit season.
