MILAN, Feb. 18 (Class Editori) — The German global carrier Hapag-Lloyd announced the start of a direct scheduled service, without intermediate stops, between Southern China and Northern Europe with a transit time of 27 days, which is very competitive compared to the average 40-45 days of traditional connections with stopovers.
"With the new China Germany Express (CGX) service, Hapag-Lloyd will provide a new port of entry for shipping traffic to and from Southern China by weekly connecting it directly with Northern Europe. Customers will thus be able to use intermodal services of the Dachan Bay to access that area of China while they will also be able to reach the Central and Eastern Europe markets through Hamburg," Hapag-Lloyd stated.
"In order to better plan our customers' cargo, also considering the strong demand for container shipping, we wanted to develop this new service connecting China with Germany and thus address the current market challenges," Andreas Buetfering, Senior Director Trade Management Far East at Hapag-Lloyd, stated. "Thanks to our efforts, CGX was developed and it will be able to offer our customers a new and fast connection between China and Europe and achieve a double result in transport service, by both reducing its difficulties and increasing its reliability".
The new CGX service will operate with eight Panamax vessels (i.e., with a capacity of around 5,000 TEU) and replace Hapag-Lloyd's Far East Loop 6, 7 and 8 services from April 2022. The first westbound sailing, from Dachan Bay to Hamburg, is scheduled for the beginning of April, and the first eastbound sailing, from Hamburg to Dachan Bay, for the beginning of May.
It is currently not known whether a similar connection between East Asia and a Mediterranean port is under consideration.
With the entry into the field in the segment of "express" shipping lines of a big company such as Hapag-Lloyd, container transport on intercontinental routes will no longer be the prerogative of small outsider operators such as Kalypso, Volta Container Line, Fastic Logistic Ltd. and Ellerman City Liners, often the expression of shipping groups.
