BEIJING, Aug. 2 (Xinhua) -- Beijing, capital of China, is expected to build 63,000 5G base stations by the end of 2025, according to a five-year (2021-2025) plan for the city's development of the information and communications industry, the Beijing Daily reported on Monday.
It is noted that a total of 38,000 5G base stations had been built in the city by the end of 2020.
The city will continue to increase investment in information and communications infrastructure. The investment is likely to reach 17.5 billion yuan (about 2.71 billion U.S. dollars) in 2025 from the 13.67 billion yuan in 2020, presenting an increase of 38.3 percent, said an official of Beijing Communications Administration.
The digital economy has become the main engine of economic development, and the new digital infrastructure will provide new momentum for the high-quality development of the city.
During the 14th Five-Year Plan period (2021-2025), Beijing will vigorously build infrastructure such as 5G networks, gigabit fixed networks, industrial Internet, and big data platforms to popularize 5G applications such as autonomous driving, telemedicine, and high-definition live broadcasting, according to the plan.
The city witnessed rapid development of the telecommunications business during the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-2020). In 2020, the number of mobile phone users in Beijing reached about 39.06 million, of which 4G users stood at about 31.59 million, and 5G users exceeded 4 million.
