German retailers are demanding money for digitalization from the European Union's coronavirus recovery fund. "The German government must take into account that the planned digitalization of the economy and infrastructure cannot be limited to industry, but must also cover the entire service sector," Antje Gerstein, managing director of the German Retail Association, told the Redaktionsnetzwerk Deutschland (RND). Gerstein called for a "digitalization fund" with a volume of 100 million euros for retail companies in distress due to the coronavirus crisis.
The European Commission had approved the German plans to use the EU aid on Tuesday. If the Council of EU states also approves it within the next four weeks, then disbursement can begin. In total, Germany expects 25.6 billion euros in grants from the EU’s Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF). The money from the European recovery fund is to be used, among other things, for subsidies for electric cars and building renovations, for the digitalization of health offices and the creation of 90,000 new daycare places.
