BEIJING, Dec. 24 (Xinhua) -- Southwest China's Chongqing municipality has completed a total of investment of 261.5 billion yuan (about 40 billion U.S. dollars) in transportation construction since it initiated a three-year transportation construction plan at the end of 2017, according to the local newspaper on Thursday.
A modern integrated transportation system has basically taken shape in Chongqing which has seen accelerated construction of high-speed railways, improved highway networks, and more air flight routes, according to head of the Chongqing Municipal Transportation Bureau.
During the period, Chongqing has built 62,600 kilometers of roads in rural areas.
The municipality has seen construction on high-speed railways and expressways start for more than 600 kilometers, and over 1,000 kilometers, respectively. By the end of the year, the high-speed railways and expressways under construction and put into use had neared 1,300 kilometers and 5,000 kilometers, respectively.
In terms of water transportation, Chongqing has made efforts to enhance the quality of the water routes and ports, with the water routes at the level 4 and above reaching 1,400 kilometers (Level 4 waterways allow the 500-tonne ships to navigate).
