MILAN, Dec. 7 (Class Editori) – A new Italian technology which allows to double the durability of heart valves of animal origin (swine and bovine) thanks to the use of active principles of natural sources is catching the attention of possible Chinese and U.S. partners.
The treatment has been developed in the start-up Bio Compatibility Innovation (BCI) from Padua, founded by the biologists Alessandro Gandaglia and Filippo Naso together with the doctor Ugo Stefanelli.
The procedure is based on the Alpha-Gal molecule inactivation, able to trigger a series of valvular prostheses reactions. It is about calcifications that lead to valves replacementin the long-term, ten years after the implant, on average.
"Through the trials we have confirmed that it is possible to double the valves durability thanks to our Facta technology", as the founders have explained to classxhsilkroad.it; "if this will also be confirmed after the trials with the companies, which is about to start next year, we will be able to produce a medical device to be sold on the market".
Economically, the effect will be to cut spending for national health systems. "The social cost of these valves' implant is around €14 billion," when it comes to the United States and Europe, where data are clear. In order to understand the situation, in the world today about 400,000 prostheses are implanted per year and by 2050 it is expected that about one million of them will be implanted.
Overall, it is a market worth €6.2 billion, although the latest esteems suggest that €7 billion could be reached by 2025. "If we could help companies to make their valves last longer, there would be less interventions, with lower social and health costs", they added.
BCI was also able to work with the support of community funding under the Horizon2020 program, conceived by Brussels in order to support research. The last round of financing by private individuals, on the other hand, yielded €1.2 million.
At present, the startup has four patents. "In order to achieve certain goals, we have appointed an advisory board of international importance," they added, "The target is to develop other technologies."
