July 02, 2020

Abstract : The group led by Stefano Cao, through a 50% JV with Clough, an engineering company of Perth, will build on the West coast one of the largest plants worldwide for the production of fertilizers, which will serve the local market but will also be exported.

MILAN, July 1 (Class Editori) - Saipem comes back to Australia with an important contract. Through a 50% Joint Venture with Clough, an engineering company of Perth (Australia), it has been selected by Perdaman Industries as exclusive EPC contractor in order to develop a urea production plant in the Burrup peninsula, located about 20 km away from the North-west part of Karratha, on the Australian West coast.

The formalization of the agreement is subject to the final decision of investment, the final signature of the EPC contract and the obtaining of all the government and regulatory authorizations.

Saipem and Clough will have to carry out the engineering, building, pre-commissioning and commissioning of the plant, including services, urea treatment, storage tanks and the civil buildings of the site.

The whole project will be made up of the fertilizing urea production plant and the related structures, in order to reach a capacity of 2 million tons of urea per year, and will also include a treatment plant for waste waters, a power plant of 100 MW, as well as urea storage, loading and unloading plants. Urea will be carried from the port area of Pilbara to the local and offshore market, and from 50 to 100 cargos per year are forecasted.

“Saipem has a strategic interest in Australia and a recognised international experience in the urea/ammonia production. Thanks to this joint venture, we agree upon a collaboration with a company such as Clough which has been carrying out projects for over a century in this country” as Alessandro Tattini- APAC Area Manager of the E&C Onshore Division of Saipem- has underlined. According to him, this joint venture “will lead to the executionof one of the biggest urea projects worldwidefor our customer Perdaman”.

According to Peter Bennet- CEO of Clough- the project will employ more than 2,000 people and the entry into service of the plant will significantly reduce the Australian dependence from fertilizers imports. In addition, Bennet has explained that Clough experience on the territory, together with Saipem know-how in urea production plants, has established an unrivalled alliance.
