BEIJING, April 2 (Xinhua) -- China's tropical island province of Hainan will implement a more proactive opening strategy and accelerate the establishment of a new open economic system, so as to develop into China's important gateway towards the Pacific and Indian Oceans.
As a pivotal part of the Maritime Silk Road as well as a strategic pivot of the Belt and Road, Hainan has been actively promoting international communication and cooperation in fields like tourism, agriculture, medical treatment and health, Internet and culture in recent years.
Besides, it has been fully leveraging the home diplomatic platform of the Boao Forum for Asia to boost exchanges and cooperation with Belt and Road countries.
With these efforts, Hainan's export-oriented economy is booming. In 2019, its goods imports and exports rose by 6.8 percent on year to about 90.6 billion yuan.
It also encourages foreign investment in various advantageous industries related to its pilot free trade zone and free trade port construction.
In 2019, 338 new foreign-funded firms were established in the island, and the amount of foreign direct investment exceeded 1.5 billion U.S. dollars, soaring 106.1 percent on year. (Edited by Gu Shanshan with Xinhua Silk Road, gushanshan.1987@163.com)
