Welding, cutting stones, painting - robots could play an increasingly important role in the area of traditional skilled trades in the future. "The main aim is to replace difficult and monotonous work," said Andreas Brzezinski, Managing Director of the Dresden Chamber of Trades and Crafts, on Wednesday in Dresden. This should relieve the skilled trades people and give them more time for creative work, he said. As an example, Brzezinski cited the "Maennelmacher" in the Ore Mountains, who are known for their craftsmanship when making ornate carved wooden objects. It is conceivable that the cutting of the wood blocks could be done by machines in the future. "But when it comes to giving the smoking man an appealing facial expression, which no robot can do, then the master craftsman is needed."
With the newly founded Robotics Competence Center, the chamber wants to show what possibilities there are in the skilled trades and crafts for the use of artificial intelligence. At the official opening on Wednesday, several manufacturers and craft businesses demonstrated various applications. One of the items on display was a so-called exoskeleton, which is strapped on like a rucksack. It can relieve the craftsman when lifting heavy objects or during strenuous overhead work. The competence center works with partners from industry and academia and advises companies throughout the eastern state of Saxony. In future, various robots and their respective applications can be tested on a test field in the Dresden Chamber of Trades and Crafts.
