InfoQuest (February 14, 2020) -- Thai Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak revealed after his talks with Mr. Hiroto Izumi, special adviser to Japanese Prime Minister, that the two sides had held discussions on economic cooperation.
According to the talks, Japan will continue to consider Thailand an important economic hub and emphasized that Japan intended to invest in the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC). The Thai Deputy Prime Minister pointed out that the EEC project was progressing smoothly, and Thailand would set up special economic zones in the south, north and northeast of the country.
Japan will also attach strategic importance to its investment in Thailand and build an economic corridor that connects Vietnam, Laos, Thailand, western Myanmar and India.
Somkid went on to say that Japan is raising millions of dollars’ worth of funds from various institutions including the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to invest in ASEAN. The Deputy Prime Minister has encouraged Japan to increase its investment in Thailand.
In addition, Japan asked about Thailand's progress in joining the Comprehensive Progressive Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). The Deputy Prime Minister noted that the Thai government is expected to arrive at a conclusion in April and that Japan can safeguard Thailand's interests after Thailand becomes a member state. A committee will be set up to conduct negotiations regarding this.
