Leipzig-Halle Airport is continuing to grow. A year ago, the airport owners, Mitteldeutsche Flughafen AG, had announced investments there of 210 million euros (233 million dollars) - but in the meantime the total volume had reached half a billion euros, airport spokesman Uwe Schuhart said. Mitteldeutsche Flughafen is bearing the costs.
Alongside an expansion of the airport apron, a second "Cargo City" to be located in the northern part of the airport grounds is now planned. In addition, the infrastructure needs expanding in order to keep up with demand by air freight carriers, Schuhart said.
He notes that Leipzig-Halle is Germany's second-biggest air cargo airport after Frankfurt, "and number five in Europe." Air freight volume at the airport has grown more than ten-fold since 2007. The airport has around 10,000 employees and in the meantime more than 50 air freight carriers have operations at the hub.
The figures show that, bucking the national trend, Leipzig-Halle Airport after ten years of growth is still growing. In the first nine months of 2019, air cargo volume had risen by 0.6 per cent year-on-year, Schuhart said. By contrast, according to the German airports federation ADV, nationwide air cargo turnover in August had fallen by 5.2 per cent from the same month last year.
