German telecommunications provider Deutsche Telekom on Thursday launched its 5G network in five major cities, the company said in Berlin, making it the second 5G provider in Germany after Vodafone.

The 5G network is now available in the German cities Berlin, Munich, Cologne, Bonn and Darmstadt, Deutsche Telekom said.

The company so far only has 129 antennas in Germany that currently transmit 5G, out of the total of 30,000 antennas that are owned by Deutsche Telekom.

By the end of the year the company plans to have around 300 antennas providing the network, and 5G will be available in Leipzig and Hamburg as well.

In July, Vodafone became the first telecommunications company to launch the high-speed mobile network. The company now has more than 150 5G antennas in Germany, spread across 52 locations.

Private users need new, 5G-compatible smartphones, to access 5G. Smartphone manufacturers Huawei and Samsung have both brought out compatible phones since the new technology was first introduced in Germany.

For most private consumers the high-speed technology is not necessary, however industries and businesses will be able to profit from 5G.
