MILAN, Aug 16 (Class Editori) - The city of Beijing is ready to allow foreign investments in vpn services. The program announced by the department of commerce of the municipality provides that investments, from the end of next year, will be possible within special economic zones. The ownership will still have to be 50% shared with a local partner.
The operation is designed to attract foreign telecommunications companies, so as to be able to provide companies with services to circumvent internet access restrictions, bypassing the so-called Great Firewall. Currently, as the South China Morning Post recalls, 135 out of the top 1,000 global sites are not accessible in China unless you use a vpn (virtual private network). These include Google, Facebook, Twitter, Youtube.
In past years, the administration has repeatedly tried to sanction the offer of services which allows to circumvent navigation restrictions. However, there have been more open experiments. Last year, for example, the island of Hainan undertook to grant free navigation for foreign tourists. However, the experiment failed after a few days.
The Beijing experimentation is also a response to the demands of the business world for a free internet access. In the first half of the year, the growth of the metropolis slowed to 6.3%, while tax revenues decreased by 2.5%.
