InfoQuest (July 30, 2019) -- Thailand's Office of Industrial Economics (OIE) under the Ministry of Industry revealed that the manufacturing production index (MPI) stood at 100.49 in June 2019, down 5.54 percent from the same period last year, and the MPI in the second quarter of this year contracted by 2.64 percent from a year earlier. The decline resulted from the continuous slowdown of the global economy and trade.
The main industries weighing on the MPI include automobiles and engines, rubber products, petroleum products, hard disk drives and jewelry. Except the decline in the petroleum sector is attributed to the maintenance period, which requires regular maintenance on refineries, the drop in other industries is mainly due to the shrunk of domestic demand and slowdown of orders in overseas markets.
