Germany should focus its digitalization efforts on the topic of "autonomous driving," according to the renowned computer scientist Chris Boos. "We need a topic that everyone can gather behind," the AI expert told the news portal “t-online.de”. Boos, who as a member of the Digital Council advises the German government, drew a comparison with the announcement of the then US President John F. Kennedy about sending a man to the moon. "Our moon landing is autonomous driving."
Boos emphasized the importance of the automotive industry to Germany: "Without the car industry, nothing works in this country. Currently the only indicator is the number of cars sold. In the future, however, it will be a question of kilometres driven. That changes everything.”
Up to now, it has been companies in the United States and China that have been the main driving forces behind the development of autonomous cars.
Boos emphasized that for most people the car symbolizes economic strength and personal freedom. But there was much more to the topic - "for example, sustainability."
The Federal Government's Digital Council of 10 experts was set up in August 2018. They are supposed to advise and propel the government to implement policies. These include projects such as a strategy for artificial intelligence (AI), the digital pact for schools, the introduction of a citizens' portal and the digitalization of the public administration.
