RAT and FTI Jointly Promote 200,000 Rai Rubber Plantation Demonstration Zone Upgrade to PEFC

July 01, 2019

Abstract : Thai RAT said that the launch of Thai Certification Scheme (TFCS) by the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) became the only organization in Thailand to provide certification services for sustainable forest management.

InfoQuest, (June 28, 2019) -- On June 27, Mr. Nakorn Laiwiraphat, deputy director of Business and Operations, Rubber Authority of Thailand (RAT), said that the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) launched the Thai Forest Certification Scheme (TFCS), which became the only organization in Thailand to provide certification services for sustainable forest management. TFCS is equivalent to the international standard (The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification, PEFC). Therefore, RAT plans to cooperate with FTI to include rubber plantations in the above standard. By promoting the upgrading of rubber plantations to international standard, the value of rubber products and rubber wood can be improved.

RAT has played an important role in promoting farmers to obtain international standard certification (PEFC). The details are as follows: Budget support is provided in accordance with Article 49 (3) of the Thailand Rubber Administration Act 2015 to support and assist farmers, rubber agricultural research institutes and rubber operators and promote their development. At the same time, a 200,000 rai rubber plantation demonstration zone has been established in seven southern provinces including Nakhon Si Thammarat, Surat Thani, Songkhla, Krabi, Trang, Phatthalung, and Satun. Because these areas are densely populated with rubber plantations, and there are many companies that purchase latex and rubber wood. The follow-up plan will expand the target rubber plantation area upgraded to meet international standard to all parts of Thailand.
