Unexpectedly high government revenues from the auction of 5G mobile phone frequencies have been met with strong criticism in Germany.
In a rare show of unity, representatives of the FDP and Greens political parties and the Verdi trade union complained that the mobile phone companies will now have less funds available, which could be an impediment to the upcoming network expansion.
"5G is uncharted territory, its development will be laborious and expensive - so it is all the more incomprehensible that the companies also must pay a lot for the frequency blocks," said Verdi expert Christoph Heil. "Every euro that remains in the sector is important."
The auction of the 5G frequencies started almost five weeks ago. Its four participants - Deutsche Telekom, Vodafone, Telefonica and Drillisch - have already bid a total of nearly 5.4 billion euros (6 billion dollars). The auction was set to resume on Tuesday following a break for Easter.
