BEIJING, April 8 (Xinhua) -- As a cargo ship belonging to the Geneva-based Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A. (MSC) departed Xiamen Port in east China's Fujian Province last Tuesday morning, the 21st Southeast Asia shipping route of Xiamen Port was officially opened.
The cargo ship, carrying food, clothing, furniture and other goods, headed directly to Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia and Singapore.
According to Xiamen Port Holding Group Co., Ltd., this is also the sixth 21st Century Maritime Silk Road shipping route newly added since March 6 this year in Xiamen Port, a key node along the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road routes.
As the first Southeast Asia shipping route opened by MSC, the world's second largest shipping company, in Xiamen Port, this route will not only foster trade between Xiamen and Southeast Asia, but also add a new route choice for Xiamen Port and importers and exporters along the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road routes.
Through effective cooperation with the Xiamen-Jiangxi freight train serving the “Silk Road Sea Transport” project launched by east China's Fujian Province last December, the route can also help transport goods from east China's Jiangxi Province to key ports along the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road routes.
Official data showed that from last December to March 31 this year, a total of 269 voyages have been made on the 34 named routes serving the “Silk Road Sea Transport” project, completing container throughput exceeding 210,000 TEUs. Among them, 221 voyages were finished by Xiamen Port with container throughput totaling 160,000 TEUs. (Edited by Gu Shanshan)
