The use of artificial intelligence (AI) is rising sharply in German industry, according to a study published on Monday, the opening day of the Hanover industrial trade fair.
Some 12 percent of industrial companies are already making use of AI, according to Achim Berg, president of Bitkom, the association for the IT sector in Germany.
"AI is taking over the factories at a rapid pace," Berg said, adding that it had the potential to "revolutionize industry".
According to the Bitkom study, half of all companies are working on the assumption that machine learning will cause widespread changes in current business practices, with 47 percent anticipating a rise in productivity and 39 percent seeing use in so-called "predictive maintenance" to forecast faults ahead of time.
Some 25 percent of machines in German manufacturing are now linked to the internet, and in 10 percent of companies more than half the machines are networked.
This year, around 5 percent of total turnover is set to be invested in the IT and related sectors in industrial companies.
IT is a central theme at this year's Hanover trade fair, the world's largest industrial trade fair.
