This year, the state of Lower Saxony is continuing to invest more in its seaports. According to the state's economics ministry, 41 million euros in state subsidies have been earmarked for this purpose. The ports of Brake, Cuxhaven, Emden, Leer, Nordenham, Oldenburg, Papenburg, Wilhelmshaven and Stade are located on Lower Saxony's North Sea coast.
Last year, the state had already invested 40 million euros in the port infrastructure company Niedersachsen Ports GmbH & Co. KG. The money is being used to keep the ports modern and competitive. Only 30 million euros in subsidies had originally been planned for both 2018 and 2019.
By 2017, the seaports of Lower Saxony increased their transhipment to 53.4 million tonnes. In 2018, Hamburg, Germany's largest port, handled 135.1 million tonnes, while the ports of Bremen and Bremerhaven handled 74 million tonnes.
