The Fiumicino Airport received the Ceiv certification issued by IATA. As a matter of fact, in 2018 the cargo division of the Leonardo Da Vinci registered an increase of 11%. In terms of absolute volumes it means having exceeded for the first time since 2000 the total amount of 200 thousand tons of goods handled.
The first community of pharmaceutical operators with Ceiv certification issued by IATA was founded in Fiumicino. The project is developing on the basis of the growth of the goods business in the Rome airport. As a matter of fact, in 2018 the cargo division of the Leonardo Da Vinci registered an increase of 11%. In terms of absolute volumes, it means having exceeded for the first time since 2000 the total amount of 200 thousand tons of goods handled. "An awakening linked to the development of the long haul", explains Fausto Palombelli, marketing and aviation development director of Aeroporti di Roma. Goods mainly travel to North America, but also from and to the Far East.
"Gulf and Chinese carriers use larger machines, with a greater belly capacity, the so-called belly," adds the top manager of the Atlantia group company. It means greater transport capacity. The project is one of the Lazio manufacturing vocations.
The district of medicine, partly near to Fiumicino, is the second in Italy and among the main production centers of Europe, and among the main regional exports. "First example in Italy, Fiumicino Airport is acting as a promoter for the creation of a community of players active on Fiumicino in the pharmaceutical cargo sector, and it is doing it by following the international standards linked to the Ceiv Pharma certification issued by IATA (the international organization of air transport, editor's note). Fiumicino therefore becomes a center of excellence for the standard validation of pharmaceutical logistics", adds Palombelli, "which it means that the entire supply chain guarantees shipment along the entire transport process, to guarantee the integrity of medicines, against any health problems."
The Airport in Rome is therefore proposed as a logistics hub for areas further south than the traditional logistics centers of Northern Europe and Italy. The medicine community therefore intends to be an "added value" and the logistic validation. Looking ahead, the project could also act as a driving force for the development of the business citadel built near the airport, to which even pharmaceutical companies could look with interest.
