In the Erzgebirge region of the eastern German state of Saxony, a network of around 70 companies and research institutions is working on the acoustics of tomorrow. An innovative audio system is to make three-dimensional hearing, already used for major concerts and cinema, accessible for the masses. "The goal is a natural sound reproduction at lower costs," explained the network’s spokesman Friedrich Blutner at the project presentation in the presence of Saxony’s Minister President Michael Kretschmer on Monday in Zwönitz. For example, the audio system, which is partly made from recycled cardboard, can be used in schools and museums as well as in the marketing of products.
As a first step, an innovation and development center is to be built in an old factory building in Zwönitz. The state of Saxony is providing 8 million euros in funding for the conversion of the former warehouse.
