Revenues in online retail trade in Germany are expected to grow somewhat more slowly, according to a study by experts at Regensburg University. The share of internet-based trade is foreseen rising to 15 percent of total retail business over the next five years, from the current 10 percent share, the ibi Institut in Regensburg said Wednesday.
This would amount to an annual growth rate for online commerce of 6.6 percent, compared with the yearly 18 percent growth shown between 2010 and 2017. In that period, turnover in the overall retail trade sector grew by 2.7 percent.
The share of medium-sized retailers has dropped by nearly one-half since the year 2000, noted the institute, which specialises in the study of digitalisation in business and financial services. Since online sales of food scarcely plays a role, the share of online business in the remaining retail sector has already reached around 15 percent today, said Holger Seidenschwarz, who headed the study at ibi Institut.
