The Leipzig/Halle airport in Germany is expanding due to its rapidly growing cargo volumes. Plans include an apron extension, the creation of additional taxiways and the construction of new buildings, Mitteldeutsche Airport Holding announced on Wednesday.
The investments will amount to around 210 million euros.
"That we can now selectively develop existing land reserves is a significant advantage of our airport's location and the basis for demand-oriented growth," said managing director Johannes Jaehn.
The cargo volumes at Germany's second-largest airfreight hub have increased more than tenfold since 2007 and continue to record disproportionate growth.
Jaehn said extensive surveys were conducted to assess the planned expansion's consequences. This included an environmental impact study and assessments on the development of traffic volumes, the soil situation, aircraft noise and the emission of air pollutants.
Species and nature conservation studies and a landscape conservation support plan were also prepared.
