A 10-member panel of experts has been tasked by the German cabinet with advising the federal government on the country's digitalization.
German ministers appointed the digital council on Wednesday, and panel members held their first session thereafter.
The digital council's economists, researchers, entrepreneurs and start-up founders are expected to meet at least twice a year with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and other government members to bring their practical experience into policy.
"We are intended to advise the federal government, we are intended to propel it, and we are intended to support it," said Katrin Suder, the former defence junior minister and management consultant who heads the digital council.
The experts are expected to assist in the implementation of digitalization projects related to administrative tasks, society, education, the economy and the labour market.
Germany has for years lagged behind in digitizing its national and local governments. Many regions lack basic infrastructure, namely fast internet, and schools and universities are also deficient in technical capabilities.
