New car sales in Germany raced ahead in July amid strong domestic demand, the government's motor authority said on Thursday.
The number of new registrations of passenger vehicles jumped 12.3 per cent to 317,848 in July compared with the same month a year earlier, the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) said.
A total of 2.16 million cars were sold between January and July, representing a 4.2-per-cent rise on the same period in 2017, the KBA said.
It was the highest sales volume in the first seven months of a year since 2009, the Federation of the German Automotive Industry (VDA) said.
However, German car exports slumped by 6 per cent to 299,200 vehicles in July and, despite strong domestic demand, auto pro duction also shrank by 5 per cent to 358,800 vehicles last month.
Demand for diesel cars also continued to fall in the wake of the emissions scandal that has hit the German car industry.
Only one in three car buyers was interested in purchasing a diesel-powered vehicle in July, the KBA said.
