Volkswagen plans to open three new production facilities in China that will shore up its efforts to enter the electric car market there, according to an internal company magazine.
Through its joint venture FAW-VW, the German carmaker is looking to set up factories in Qingdao, Tianjin and Foshan, VW's Inside said. Volkswagen Group China wants to bring 40 locally produced cars with electric drive onto the Chinese market in the next seven to eight years.
VW and its partner in China had earlier announced plans to invest some 15 billion euros (17.5 billion dollars) into the development of electric cars and self-driving vehicles until the end of 2022.
China, a leading market for electromobility, is VW's most important single market. Chinese buyers who purchase electric vehicles receive a state subsidy, and Beijing has also ordered a production quota for electric vehicles of 10 per cent, which will take effect in 2019.
