BUDAPEST, April 9 (Xinhua) -- Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban secured a third consecutive term in the general elections on Sunday that gave him two thirds of the parliament, he thanked Hungarians for having "saved the country."
"Hungary secured a historic victory today, and I would like to thank the voting citizens, and especially those who have voted for us and remained loyal," Orban told to its cheering crowd.
"We have received the opportunity to save ourselves, to save Hungary," he added.
"I would also like to thank the vote of the ethnic Hungarians who have helped to save the motherland," he added.
Orban's ruling Fidesz-KDNP coalition won the general elections in Hungary on Sunday, with 48.86 percent of the vote, at 95.10 percent of the votes counted by the National Election office.
Former radical Jobbik party came second with 19.75 percent of the vote and MSZP-Parbeszed (Hungarian Socialist Party-Dialogue) third with 12.38 percent.
The president of Jobbik party, Gabor Vona announced his resignation after the publication of the results. In the campaign, he promised to resign if his party did not achieve victory in the elections.
The president of the Socialist party MSZP, Gyula Molnar also presented his resignation with the whole presidium after the modest result of his party.
Two other parties made it to the parliament, the green-eco LMP with 6.92 percent and the left-liberal DK (Democratic coalition) with 5.59 percent.
At 95.10 percent of votes counted, this result means that Fidesz-KDNP received 133 seats form 199, getting a qualified majority just like in 2014, and in 2010.
Jobbik received 26 seats, MSZP-Parbeszed 20, Democratic Coalition 9, LMP 8, Egyutt 1, and a deputy of the German ethnic minority and and independent received also 1-1 seat.
The definitive official result will be known later in the week, after the count of the votes arriving by correspondence from the Hungarians living and working abroad.
