ERDENET -- Harbin Electric International Co. Ltd., (HEI) started construction of a thermal power plant expansion project in Erdenet in Mongolia on May 7, which is expected to give a new impetus to Mongolia's mining industry development upon completion.
The plant is owned by Erdenet Mining Corporation (EMC), and the expansion project of the thermal power plant includes four 12 MW turbo generator sets, all developed by China's independent technology. The contract value is 41.83 million U.S. dollars.
According to the EMC, global cooper prices have been staying at low levels, and the expansion of the plant would not only provide sufficient electricity power for cooper exploitation but also lower costs of mining and processing.
Lu Hua, director responsible for the project from the HEI, said that the project is the company's first one in Mongolia, and it believes with its strength and profession team in power plant construction will make the project a model of equipment building cooperation under the Belt and Road initiative.
The EMC is a joint-venture invested by Mongolia and Russia. It is one of the biggest corporations in Mongolia and its annual output value is more than 10 percent of Mongolia's GDP.
