Over 20 Chinese railway projects underway overseas -- Chinese companies are carrying out more than 20 railway projects overseas, with a total investment of 100 billion yuan (15 billion U.S. dollars), according to Zhu Zhexun, chief engineer of China Railway International Group. Construction is underway on projects including the China-Laos railway, a railway linking Indonesian capital Jakarta with Bandung, a link between Serbia and Hungary, and a metro train in Pakistan's eastern city of Lahore.p Preliminary work is being done on high-speed rail links between Malaysia and Singapore, and between Moscow and Kazan in Russia.
Georgia's longest railway tunnel completed by Chinese company -- The longest railway tunnel in Georgia was completed on Nov. 19 by a Chinese construction company. The No.9 tunnel, which is 8.3 km long, is the longest railway tunnel in Georgia. It primarily aims to improve the line that runs from the capital Tbilisi to the Black Sea. The project's design and construction is contracted to China Railway 23rd Bureau Group Co. Ltd., which won a bid for the 43.9-km-long modernization project. It is expected to be completed at the beginning of 2019.
China section of transcontinental expressway opens to traffic -- The Chinese section of a transcontinental expressway project set to link western China with Western Europe has opened to traffic. A key part of the project, a 10-km section of road in the border city of Horgos in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, which connects a quarantine area with the Lianyungang-Horgos expressway, came into use on Nov. 18, marking the across-the-board opening of the expressway in China.
Maldives public housing project undertaken by Chinese enterprises breaks ground -- A public housing project undertaken by Chinese enterprises broke ground in the second-largest island in the Maldives, Hulhumale Island, on November 18. The project, undertaken by China Machinery Engineering Corporation (CMEC) and China State Construction Engineering Corporation, will build more than 8,500 units of public housing. China Development Bank and Industrial and Commercial Bank of China provide preferential loans for the project.
Chinese consortium to build metro line in Kiev -- A consortium of two Chinese companies on Nov. 22 signed a cooperation agreement with the city of Kiev on building a fourth metro line in the Ukrainian capital. Under the cooperation agreement, the Chinese consortium will build a metro line with a length of about 20 kilometers linking Kiev residential district of Troyeschyna with the central business district. Consisting of 13 stations, the line is set to reduce the traffic jam in Kiev and ease the movement for about 500,000 Troyeschyna residents or 17 percent of the city population.
Algeria deals with Chinese firm to complete last artery motorway section -- Algeria announced on Nov. 22 deal with China's CITIC to finalize the remaining 84 km eastern section of the east-west highway near the Tunisian border, reported APS news agency. Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika approved the contract between the Algerian Motorways Agency (AAA) and the Chinese construction firm of CITIC, the source said.
Chinese firm, Zambia gov't sign agricultural infrastructure development -- China Railway Seventh Group signed an agreement with the Zambian government on Nov. 21 for the start of infrastructure development on a farming block situated in the northern part of the country. The signing of the 393-million-U.S. dollar Agricultural Infrastructure Development Project for the 200,000 hectares of Kalungwishi Farm Block in Mporokoso district will see the Chinese firm construct various infrastructures such as roads, bridges, dams, canals, power distribution lines, among others.
Widest bridge over Yangtze operational by late 2017 -- The widest bridge over the Yangtze River, China's longest, is expected to be operational by the end of 2017, authorities said. The Zhuankou Yangtze Bridge in Wuhan, capital of central China's Hubei Province, underwent load tests on Nov. 17. A total of 36 heavy trucks, each weighing 30 tonnes, were employed in the static test, while in the dynamic test, four such vehicles ran over the bridge simultaneously. The tests show that the bridge is safe for operation. The 1.51-km-long and 46-meter-wide bridge is designed to allow vehicles to run at a speed of 100 km per hour.
Chinese company to build financial center in Lao Boten Special Economic Zone -- Sinohydro Bureau 14 Co., Ltd. (Sinohydro Bureau 14) signed a construction contract on November 14 with Laos Boten Special Economic Zone Development Group to build the international business and financial center (phase II) in Boten. With a planned construction period of 2 years, the project covers a total floor area of 298,000 square meters.
