Feature: Drones light up night sky with story of China-Tanzania friendship

August 19, 2026

Abstract : "I've never seen anything like this before. It felt as if the whole sky was telling the story of our country and our friendship with China," said 24-year-old Tanzanian nurse Neema Mushi.

DAR ES SALAAM, Aug. 18 (Xinhua) -- "I've never seen anything like this before. It felt as if the whole sky was telling the story of our country and our friendship with China," said 24-year-old Tanzanian nurse Neema Mushi.

After finishing her shift, Mushi joined hundreds of spectators at the KMC Football Stadium, where 500 drones soared overhead, weaving together images of Tanzania's landmarks, China-Tanzania cooperation, and a friendship that has endured for generations.

"It wasn't just beautiful," she said. "It reminded me how much our two countries have achieved together and made me excited about what we can build in the future."

Watched by Tanzanians and members of the Chinese community, the spectacular drone light show blended technology, culture, and history into a colorful celebration of the longstanding ties between China and Tanzania.

The performance opened with the logo of the 2026 China-Africa Year of People-to-People Exchanges glowing in the night sky above Dar es Salaam.

The Chinese and Tanzanian national flags appeared side by side. Their outlines gradually illuminated before transforming into the Kiswahili word "Rafiki," meaning "Friend."

Chinese Ambassador to Tanzania Chen Mingjian said the traditional friendship between the two countries had been forged by the elder leaders of China and Tanzania and strengthened through decades of cooperation.

"Friendship, which derives from close people-to-people exchange, holds the key to sound state-to-state relations," Chen said in her remarks at the event.

She said the drone performance offered more than a display of advanced technology, describing it as a dialogue between civilizations and peoples separated by mountains and seas but connected by friendship.

The outline of the African continent appeared first, followed by a red point marking Tanzania. The country's map then filled with the colors of the Tanzanian flag, before Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa's highest mountain, emerged.

The drones took the audience to Zanzibar, where traditional architecture glistened, boats sailed across the waters and dolphins leaped through the waves. Next came the Arusha Stadium, with a football player performing a powerful volley.

Iconic landmarks, including the Chinese-built Magufuli Bridge and the Tanzania-Zambia Railway, also featured in the light show.

The Chinese ambassador underlined the railway as an enduring bond forged through shared efforts, saying that China and Tanzania have consistently stood at the forefront of China-Africa cooperation.

Saad Mtambule, Kinondoni district commissioner, highlighted the historical foundations of the relationship.

"China and Tanzania, we have a very longstanding relationship," Mtambule said, citing agriculture, education, infrastructure and trade among areas of cooperation.

"We Tanzanians are catching up through this beautiful relationship," he said, ending his remarks with "Ni hao," the Chinese greeting for hello.

Zhou Jie, team leader of Shaanxi Media Convergence, one of the event's organizers, said that the initiative seeks to explore the harmony of civilizations, tell stories of China-Africa friendship and cooperation, and strengthen bonds between the peoples of China and Africa.

"With the night sky as our canvas and drones as our brush, we paint dazzling light and shadow to honor the traditional friendship between China and Tanzania," said Zhou.

According to the Chinese ambassador, China stands ready to work with Tanzania to carry forward their traditional friendship, deepen mutual learning between civilizations and expand cooperation in areas including the digital economy, technological innovation and cultural exchange.

She said such cooperation should deliver greater benefits to the peoples of both countries.

As the show approached its climax, multiple fireworks exploded across the sky while lights throughout the stadium illuminated simultaneously. The colorful finale brought cheers from the audience.

For Mushi, the message was more about the people-to-people friendship behind the images.

"May every beam of light illuminating the night sky sow seeds of mutual trust and shared dreams in the hearts of our peoples," she said.
