KIEV, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- Ukraine has set a target to turn from a natural gas importer to exporter by 2035, the country's Deputy Prime Minister Volodymyr Kistion said here on Wednesday.
"Our goal is to increase the gas production to 35 billion cubic meters in 2035, while reducing the consumption to 30 billion cubic meters. It would create an opportunity for exporting five billion cubic meters of gas," Kistion told a cabinet meeting.
He explained that the goal could be achieved through the implementation of the energy sector reform, which among other things, envisages an upgrade of gas extracting infrastructure.
Currently, Ukraine extracts only 3.5 percent of its confirmed gas reserves annually, Kistion said.
Last year, Ukraine's gas consumption stood at 33.3 billion cubic meters, of which 20.2 billion cubic meters were produced domestically and the rest were imported from abroad. Enditem
