BEIJING, Sept.6 (Xinhua)-- Altogether three infrastructure construction projects, namely Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), Airport Elevated Expressway (AEE) and Urban Rail Transit (URT) in Dhaka, capital city of Bangladeshi, have successively started construction recently. The projects are fully or partially undertaken by Chinese enterprises.
The BRT system in Dhaka is undertaken by China Gezhouba (Group) Corporation. The upcoming BRT, as the first such transit in Bangladesh, would not only improve traffic conditions between Dhaka International Airport and Gazipur, but also facilitate economic exchanges between northern Dhaka and other places in the city, thereby playing a significant role in curbing Dhaka’s transportation woes. After completion, the BRT system will be able to carry 20,000 passengers per hour.
Meanwhile, AEE has been jointly contracted by SINOHYDRO Corporation, Limited and China Shandong International Economic & Technical Cooperation Group, Ltd. It is the first expressway planned by the Bangladeshi government to improve the transport conditions in Dhaka. It is also one of the infrastructure construction projects being preferentially developed by the government. This expressway starts from Dhaka International Airport and ends at Dhaka-Chittagong High-Grade Highway, passing through the downtown from north to south.
URT project, the first light rail in Bangladesh, will be completed by 2024. Upon completion, the maximum speed of the light rail will reach 100km/h, with a carrying capacity of 500,000 people per day. (Edited by Ma Xin, maxin11@xinhua.org)
