FRANKFURT, July 18 (Xinhua) -- German carmaker Daimler announced Tuesday "a comprehensive plan for diesel engines", extending the recall action to include over three million Mercedes-Benz vehicles across Europe over diesel emissions.
The Stuttgart-based company said in a statement that the voluntary service action has already been carried out for Merzedes compact-class cars as well as for V-Class customers.
"The public debate about diesel engines is creating uncertainty -- especially for our customers," said Dieter Zetsche, Chairman of the Board of Management of Daimler, adding that additional measures have been made by the Board to reassure drivers of diesel cars and to strengthen confidence in diesel technology.
Daimler is investing about 220 million euros for the recall, which makes it possible to provide the customers with free service. The company said the implementation of the measures will be starting in the next weeks, however, it will continue over a longer period of time.
In addition, as part of the service action, Daimler plans to launch rapidly a completely new Diesel engine family.
Daimler is allegedly using illegal software in diesel vehicles to cheat in emissions tests.
