BEIJING, Dec. 6 (Xinhua) - A new container terminal at the port of Temain Ghana, West Africa, started construction on November 16, according to news released on the website of its contractor - China Harbour Engineering CompanyLtd (CHEC).
The project, Tema port’s biggest expansion program, includes construction of four 150,000-deadweight tonnage (DWT) container berths, 3,858 meters of breakwater, nearly 130 hectares of land reclamation and relevant dredging works.
Previously in late September, CHEC inked with the project’s owner -Meridian Port Services Limited (MPS), a joint business unit composed of the Ghana port authority, APMT and Bollore a master contract for the project.
With contract value at 475 million US dollars, the project was scheduled to go through a construction period of 51 months and be completed in October 2020.
In Ghana, more than 80 percent of port logistics is undertaken by the port of Tema, a pivotal goods terminal and port in West Africa. However, its present capacityis far from being enough to satisfy increasing logistics demand as Ghana’s national economy grows and the regional economic linking strengthens in West Africa.
After the expansion project, the port of Tema would enable Ghana to become an important trade and investment center in West Africa, said Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama at the opening ceremony on November 16.
Apart from creating about 1,000 jobs for local citizens, the project may bring indirectly employment for about 4,000 people and cultivate a large number of technical professionals for Ghana. Enditem
