NANJING, June 29 (Xinhua) -- Chinese State Councilor Wang Yong Thursday called for more international cooperation in protecting geographical indications (GIs).
GIs are signs used on products that have a specific geographical origin and are protected as a form of intellectual property.
To facilitate growth in international trade and investments, GI cooperation should be expanded and strengthened, Wang said at the opening of the Eighth Worldwide Symposium on Geographical Indications.
Premier Li Keqiang also sent a congratulatory letter to the biennial symposium, which runs until July 1 in Yangzhou, east China's Jiangsu Province.
Wang suggested a communication platform to coordinate GI protection and called for progress on updating the international GI rules.
The Chinese government will improve its GI management and offer more guidance on the application and use of GIs, said Wang.
