BEIJING, Jan. 13 (Xinhua) -- Shipments of mobile phones in China registered a year-on-year growth of 8 percent to 560 million units in 2016, including 88.9 percent or 498 million homebred mobile phones, up 16.1 percent on year, according to China Academy of Information and Communication Technology.
In December, shipments of homebred mobile phones rose 16.7 percent on year to 56 million units, presenting 88.7 percent in total shipment of mobile phones in China.
The stunning performance of China's homebred mobile phones was mainly attributed to the good sales performance both online and offline.
Besides, the expansion in overseas market also helped to realize the fast growth in shipments. In 2016, Meizu recorded sales of 22 million mobile phones, including 10 percent or 2 million phones sold in overseas market.
Meizu targets to dig market in fourth-, fifth-, and sixth-tier cities, and make major breakthrough in Eastern Europe, said Li Nan, vice president with Meizu.
With expanding market share, China's homebred mobile phones would focus more on brand, product, services, and profitability in 2017, an insider said. Enditem (Edited by Li Xiaohui, lixh@xinhua.org)
