WASHINGTON, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- The White House confirmed on Tuesday that U.S. President Donald Trump will make an announcement later this week on an overall Iran strategy.
"He'll make that later this week," said White House spokesperson Sarah Sanders here at the daily briefing.
"The president has reached a decision on an overall Iran strategy. He wants to make sure that we have a broad policy to deal with that, not just one part of it," Sanders added.
Multiple media reports had early said that Trump was expected to announce soon that he will "decertify" the landmark Iran nuclear deal, a move that could lead to the potential collapse of the agreement.
The nuclear deal was reached between Iran and the world six powers of Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States plus Germany in July 2015. The deal, officially known as Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, has helped defuse the Iran nuclear crisis and bolstered the international non-proliferation regime.
Trump has long criticized the Iran nuclear pact. In his speech delivered at UN General Assembly last month, Trump called the agreement "an embarrassment" for the United States and indicated that he may not recertify the deal at its mid-October deadline.
The Trump administration is due to inform the Congress by Oct. 15 whether Tehran is complying with the deal. If he decides it is not, it could open the way for U.S. lawmakers to reimpose sanctions against Iran.
Last month, the International Atomic Energy Agency, a UN nuclear watchdog, said that Iran was playing by the rules set out in the nuclear accord.
