BEIJING, Dec. 9 (Xinhua) -- Under the “one country, two systems” principle, Hong Kong plays a key role in the implementation of the Belt and Road Initiative and meanwhile, can serve as a "super connector" between the Chinese mainland and the rest of the world, Hong Kong Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying said on Dec. 7.
Hong Kong is part of China, and Hong Kong’s goods and services enjoy preferential access to the Chinese mainland under measures such as CEPA (Closer Economic Partnership Agreement), said Leung when addressing the China Daily Asia Leadership Roundtable in Hong Kong.
In terms of the capital market, the establishment of Shanghai-Hong Kong Stock Connect and Shenzhen-Hong Kong Stock Connect is a win-win result for both the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong,
Unlike mainland cities, Hong Kong has in place a separate social, economic and legal systems, Leung said, adding that Hong Kong has a highly cosmopolitan society and worldwide business connections.
China’s Belt and Road Initiative offers “unprecedented promises” for the city, and Hong Kong is in a good position to benefit from it.
Leung also said that the Belt and Road Initiative not only has to do with doing business, but also applies to promoting cultural understanding and exchange and establishing friendship among different communities and people, especially the youth. (Edited by Yang Yifan, yangyifan@xinhua.org)
