Argentina endorses joint construction of hydroelectric dams with China -- Argentina's government announced on August 28 it was endorsing the joint construction of two hydroelectric dams in southern Santa Cruz Province with a Chinese company. President Mauricio Macri's administration announced the endorsement via a joint resolution issued by the ministries of energy and environment. Once completed, the dams will provide 5,000 gigawatt hours of energy, enough to power 1.5 million homes and meet 4 percent of the country's annual energy needs.
New highway along Yellow River opens to traffic -- A new highway along the Yellow River in northwest China's Shaanxi Province opened to traffic on August 28. The north-south highway which starts in the city of Yulin and ends in Weinan travels 828.5 km along the west bank of the Yellow River. At cost of 6.9 billion yuan (1 billion U.S. dollars), the highway across 12 districts and counties will benefit more than 2 million people. The highway also links nine expressways, 13 major highways and 80 country roads.
MoU on power transmission from China to Vietnam via Laos signed in Kunming -- China Southern Power Grid Yunnan International Company recently signed the memorandum of understanding on ultra-high voltage power transmission from China to Vietnam via Laos with the national power company of Laos, Vietnam Hanoi-Vientiane power company and another Lao partner in Kunming, reported Yunnan Daily. The four parties agreed on power transmission of 5-6 million kilowatts from China to Vietnam via Laos during 2021 and 2025.
China-Laos railway enters phase of comprehensive construction -- The Laos-China Railway Company announced on August 27 that the China-Laos railway project has entered the phase of comprehensive construction in an orderly and effective way. The construction of the railway officially started on Dec. 25, 2016 in northern Laos' Luang Prabang province. In March this year, a campaign of 100-day dry season working competition was launched to speed up the construction process.
China drilling longest tunnel for China-Myanmar railway -- Chinese engineers on August 28 employed its first homemade tunnel boring machine to drill the country's longest rail tunnel, which is part of a railway that will connect China with Myanmar. The Gaoligong Mountain Tunnel, 34.5km long, is a key project for a 331km-long railway that links Dali to Ruili, both in southwest China's Yunnan Province.
AfDB seeks to fund construction of China-backed coal power plant in Kenya -- African Development Bank (AfDB) is in talks with investors to fund the construction of Kenya's Chinese-backed coal power plant, bank officials said on August 28. AfDB Director-General of the East Africa Regional office Gabriel Negatu told Xinhua in Nairobi that they are awaiting the environmental and social audits before they can release the funds. "The owners of the 1000 MW Lamu coal plant have approached AfDB for funding to the tune of 100 million U.S. dollars as well as guarantees of a similar amount for the construction of the power plant," Negatu said.

The airport, to be the second largest in Africa, has a designed capacity of 10 million passengers a year. It will be able to accommodate the world's largest aircraft, including Airbus-A 380.
Construction of China-built Algeria's Great Mosque nears completion -- Chinese company is stepping up efforts to build the Great Mosque of Algiers, which is now the highest building in Africa. In 2012, China State Construction Engineering Co. Ltd. (CSCEC) won the contract to build the 1.5 billion-U.S.-dollar mosque. The complex will house 12 constructions, including the highest minarets in the world at 265 meters, a prayer hall, a library, and a museum of Islamic art and history. The minarets is also the highest building in Africa. Its main structure is capped on March 11, 2017.
Hengyuan Refining launches upgrading project in Malaysia -- Hengyuan Refining Company (HRC), formerly known as Shell Refining Company (Federation of Malaya), held a ground-breaking ceremony on August 25 to commence the construction of a refinery upgrade program that will enable the refinery to produce Euro4M grade motor gasoline. The 135 million U.S. dollar program will involve the installation of an integrated program, which will facilitate the production of gasoline that meets the Euro4M specification, the company said.
Hunan Construction Engineering Group signs USD 200 mln water conservancy project in Kenya -- The joint venture of Hunan Construction Engineering Group (HNCEG)’s Zhongxiang Overseas Company and China Geo-Engineering Corporation International Ltd. (CGCINT) recently signed a contract for building the Bostor Dam and water supply project with the Ministry of Water and Irrigation of Kenya. The contract is valued at a contract price of 201 million U.S. dollars. The project includes construction of roads, dam, hydrological generator units, water treatment plant, water supply pipe network, etc.
