BEIJING, June 16 (Xinhua) -- Dachen Island in Taizhou, a coastal city in east China's Zhejiang Province, is making efforts to build a zero-carbon energy system on the island.
The "land-island-wind power" interconnection system on the island, also known as the flexible low-frequency transmission demonstration project, can generate 6.5 million kWh of clean electricity annually, which can not only meet the electricity demand of the island but can also be sent to the mainland, said engineers with the State Grid Zhejiang Electric Power Supply Co. to a group of overseas bloggers and students from UK, Indonesia and other countries who recently visited the island as "zero-carbon experience officers". The project could reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 4,000 tons annually, added the engineers.
The hydrogen utilization project on the island also drew interests of these visitors. The project utilizes surplus wind power to electrolyze water to produce green hydrogen which can be used as emergency power source as well as in other scenarios, such as oxygen production and heat supply.
Dachen Island is creating a "zero-carbon model" for other islands, said the zero-carbon experience officers, adding that the island has achieved a balance between environmental protection and economic development. (Edited by Liang Hengwei, lianghengwei@xinhua.org)
