YANGON, April 9 (Xinhua) -- In the heart of Yangon's bustling Chinatown, a group of over 30 young people from the Feng Yi Dragon & Lion Dance Association performed lion dance on the streets to raise money for people affected by the recent earthquake.
Their performances, held from April 3 to 8, attracted many passersby and encouraged donations. The group raised 5 million kyats (about 2,380 U.S. dollars), which they plan to donate to the Mandalay and Sagaing regions, according to the Feng Yi Dragon & Lion Dance Association.
"We feel deeply for the victims. After finishing our fundraising and surveys, we will go and give help directly. We conduct a survey to know what they truly need first before we go," said Myo Maung Maung Myint, 35, an official from the association.
The association also plans to help with rehabilitation efforts in addition to giving donations, he said.
"We use the skills we have learned to help the earthquake victims as much as we can. I'm satisfied to be part of this effort," he added.
"Fundraising like this is not easy, especially wearing lion dance costumes in the sun. But we are used to it. People notice us more because of the dance, and that helps us raise more money," one member said.
"I want to help, but I can't afford it alone. Doing it with the group gives me more strength and makes it more effective," he said.
Their unique approach has touched many people. Nway Nway, 45, who donated, said, "At first, I only planned to give a little. But seeing their effort made me donate more."
"I really appreciate their unique fundraising. Their teamwork and cultural performance have made a meaningful impact, showing how young people can come together to help in times of crisis," she added.
The death toll from the devastating earthquake in Myanmar has climbed to 3,645, with 5,017 people injured and 148 still missing, as of 6 p.m. local time on Tuesday, according to a statement from the State Administration Council's Information Team.
