MOSCOW, April 1 (Xinhua) -- Construction of Silleno polyethylene plant, a joint project among overseas subsidiary of China's Sinopec, Russia's SIBUR Holding and Kazakhstan's national energy company KazMunayGas (KMG), officially commenced in Kazakhstan's Atyrau Region on Monday.
The groundbreaking ceremony was held on March 31 in the special economic zone of National Industrial Petrochemical Park in the Atyrau Region, with high-ranking officials from partner organizations in attendance.
Scheduled for completion in 2028, the facility is poised to commence commercial operations in 2029. It has a capacity of 1.25 million tons of polyethylene annually and attracts an investment of approximately 7 billion U.S. dollars.
Upon full operation, Silleno will become one of the largest projects in Kazakhstan's manufacturing industry and bolster strategically position of Kazakhstan as a regional leader in petrochemical manufacturing.
It is learned that Silleno's products will play a vital role in substituting polyethylene imports. The new plant will produce over 20 different grades of polyethylene, allowing for the replacement of about 90 percent of the imported range.
What's more, it will create around 8,000 jobs during the construction phase of the project and 800 jobs after production begins.
The project is being implemented by Silleno, with shareholders including KazMunayGas (40 percent), Sinopec Overseas Investment Holding (30 percent) and SIBUR Holding (30 percent). The plant will not only meet Kazakhstan's internal polyethylene demand but also plan to supply products to Europe, China, and Türkiye.
