Sustainability at the core of Global Apparel Conference 2024

December 17, 2024

Abstract : The event, which brought together the presidents of all the major industry associations in Humen, Guangdong, was organized by the China National Textile and Apparel Council and focused on the sector's outlook and global cooperation.

MILAN, Dec. 12 (Class Editori) --  The prestigious Global Apparel Conference 2024, held in Humen, Guangdong Province, China, concluded recently. This event, strongly supported by the Chinese government for the textile and apparel sector, saw the participation of the presidents of all the leading industry associations worldwide, including representatives from Italy, France, the UK, India, Egypt, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Morocco, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Bangladesh.

Organized by the China National Textile and Apparel Council (CNTAC), the event, titled "Collaboration for a Win-Win Future," brought together international leaders from the fashion industry to discuss sustainability, international cooperation, and a concrete vision for the future, potentially through common strategies.

The roundtable, opened and coordinated by Chen Dapeng, president of the China National Garment Association and vice president of CNTAC, highlighted the complexity of the current geopolitical landscape and the importance of addressing environmental challenges with a synergistic approach. "Only through collaboration can we build a future that meets the needs of our industry and the planet," stated Chen.

Now in its second edition, the Global Apparel Conference 2024 confirmed its position as a crucial event for the global fashion system, offering an important platform to strengthen ties between countries, promote innovation, and consolidate a shared commitment to greater sustainability, better workplace standards, and multi-level cooperation.

Apart from the closed-door discussions among industry leaders -- Italy was represented by Antonio Franceschini, executive president of CNA Federmoda -- the conference ended with a protocol of commitments that each country could gradually adopt, beyond the European green hysteria, with concrete and achievable solutions.

The conference emphasized the growing globalization of the sector and the need for increasingly close cooperation to address common challenges, such as environmental sustainability, geopolitical complexities, quality and respect in the workplace, as well as technological changes affecting the sustainable processing of raw materials.

During the eco-sustainability session, a highly followed speech was delivered by Fulvia Bacchi, president of Lineapelle and CEO of Unic, the leather sector, who demonstrated to an attentive audience how sustainable leather production can be achieved step by step.

Despite China working for years to make its companies more up-to-date and eco-friendly, thanks to its technology, research, and financial capacity to invest in new companies with those goals, it is also true that several countries present at the conference, such as Morocco, Egypt, Vietnam, Cambodia, and India, are still far behind. It is precisely with the intention of supporting these countries, along with Italy and France, that China aims to help them transition towards more eco-sustainable products.

Francesco Fiordelli, ambassador for Made in China on behalf of the two government satellites, China National Textile and Apparel Council and China National Garment Association, and their long-time exclusive representative for Italy, signed a protocol with the president of Malaysia to organize seminars and courses aimed at high-sustainability industrial development across the entire supply chain. This initiative will involve Italy's excellence in training and professionals to help improve their production systems and bring them closer to European standards.  (All rights reserved)
