BEIJING, Sept. 25 (Xinhua) -- The second phase of the Yangzhou-Zhenjiang ±200 kV direct current (DC) power transmission (Yangzhen DC phase 2) project kicked off construction on Wednesday in east China's Jiangsu Province, with the aim to further expand the application of alternating current (AC)/DC hybrid power grid technologies to help accelerate the development of a clean, low-carbon, safe and efficient new energy system, according to State Grid Jiangsu Electric Power Co., Ltd.
Exploring the construction of AC/DC hybrid power grids can not only utilize the advantages of DC power transmission to efficiently allocate power resources, but also achieve power transmission and distribution at different voltage levels through AC transmission technologies, said Chen Songtao, director of the planning unit of the construction department of State Grid Jiangsu Electric Power Co., Ltd. According to Chen, previously, there was no mature AC/DC hybrid power grid at the 10 kV-to-220 kV voltage range applied in new energy power generation areas with limited land resources.
The Yangzhen DC phase 2 project emerges as China's first high-voltage AC/DC hybrid power grid project. Built on the phase 1 converting AC lines into DC lines, the phase 2 project will add about 228 kilometers of DC power transmission lines and construct a ± 200 kV converter station at each of the generation end and the reception end.
The project starts in Huai'an District of Huai'an City and ends in Danyang City under jurisdiction of Zhenjiang. Without adding new cross-river transmission channel, the transmission capacity of the project will be increased by another 1.2 million kilowatts, effectively alleviating the pressure of power transmission and improving the flexibility of power grid operation.
The Yangzhen DC phase 2 project is expected to be put into operation in 2026, with the phase 3 scheduled to start construction in the same year and become operational in 2028. Upon construction completion, the whole Yangzhen DC project is projected to have about 3.6 million kilowatts transmission capacity, said Bai Bin, director of project management center of State Grid Jiangsu electric power engineering consulting company.
